Who We Are

We achieve our mission through several programs revolving around Literacy Outreach and Family Education. A few of our programs are highlighted here:

The Literacy Outreach Book Van: This program visits low-income housing units, schools, community events and rural areas to promote the read "20 minutes a day" message and distribute free books to children.

Adopt-a-Daycare: SSRF partners with ECEAP Head Start and childcare facilities to provide storytime activities, literacy info and presentations, and free books for children and parents.

Read With Me: SSRF partners with local businesses like Cabela's, and Barnes and Noble to promote the read "20 minutes a day" message and provide free storytime activities.

Literacy Bookshelves: SSRF stocks bookshelves at various low-income serving agencies with free books and literacy materials promoting the read "20 minutes a day" message.

Literacy Outreach for At-Risk Youth: SSRF partners with the Thurston County Food Bank, Homeless Backpack Inc, and local schools to get books into the hands of at-risk kids.

What We Do

The South Sound Reading Foundation is a non-profit organization serving Thurston and Mason Counties in Washington State. We educate and remind families about the importance of reading each day and strive to get books into every home so that every child reads or is read with at least 20 minutes a day. Daily family reading helps children develop a larger vocabulary, a longer attention span, and better listening skills--all vital to their success in school and in life. Each year we give away thousands of new and gently used books to area children and provide regular family literacy programming at a variety of locations in the South Sound area.
